Hello Diane,

We had a terrible quake last night, didn't we?

I was reading a book titled "Primate's memoir" written by Robert M. Sapolsky.

I really enjoyed reading it immensely while listening to the AM1130 news program.

Then suddenly at about 11:50 PM, a big quake shook the whole building.

I thought, "Oh my Gosh, that giant maginitude-9 earthquake finally hits Vancouver

and we all Vancouverites die at this moment!"

To my relief, however, the quake wasn't as big as I expected.
Anyway, your God as well as my God seem to have saved all the Vancouverites.

Hallelujah!

I kinda expected another much bigger quake, but fortunately it didn't take place with a big bang.

Then the female annouuncer of the AM1130 screamed:

"Folks, there are so many calls to 911, almost jamming the phone line.

Please call 911 only in emergency."

I gathered that so many Vancouverites felt the big jolt, thinking as I did---the mega earthquake has hit Vancouver eventually!
So they called 911.

This morning, when I stepped out of my suite to walk to the library, I came across one of my neighbours.
Nancy is a woman like an Amazoness in her late forties.

I thought she would be the last and sole survivor because she appeared to be a strong-willed, strong-limbed, powerfully-built woman with big boobs.

However, she seemed utterly terrified with the last night's quake.

"Kato, did you feel the giant quake, last night?" she cried.

"I thought I was going to die!

That's the biggest quake I've ever experienced in my whole life."

Suddenly your image appeared to the back of my mind.

Even Amazoness-like Nancy got shocked to death.

So, Diane, you might as well have been thrilled to death.

Now I'm really asking you.

"Are you alright after the big quake last night?"

Ten minutes after the quake, the female announcer told the audience that the epicenter was somewhere 23 kilomenters north of Victoria.
Its magnitude was 4.8.

Mind you, I was expecting a magnitude-9 quake.

Compared to magnitude 9, 4.8-quake is such a tiny quake that most of the Japanese would ignore it.

You gotta be kidding.

Well... many Vancouverites think as I do.

You see, Diane... On December 29, the Lower Mainland was rattled by a 4.7-magnitude earthquake. And now many Vancouverites are buying emergency kits before the big one will hit.



I don't believe it.

But, Diane, that's what the above article says... Many Vancouverites are getting ready for the big one. 　Diane, are you aware that we had several quakes in the past?

No, not really. 　As a matter of fact, I've never felt a sizable quake here in Vancouver---except for the one on December 29.

So, the last one might be a harbinger of the mega quake.

Tell me, Kato, if there were any recorded quakes in and around Vancouver.

Yes, there were quite a few.

You must be kidding!

Wow! ... 　So, in 1909 there was a big one in Vancouver, wasn't it?

You're telling me, Diane... Another big one is coming.

You mean, a giant quake like the one that took place in 1700?

That's right.

No kidding! 　How do you know?

If you live in the northwest of America---that is, Cascadia, you should be prepared for a giant earthquake.
Since 10,000 years ago, 18 earthquakes of magnitude 9 and over (equal to the East Japan Great Earthquake that devastated Fukushima and its surrounding areas in Japan on March 11, 2011) have caused catastrophic damages on the coasts of Cascadia.

Seemingly, a super-quake occurs approximately every 500 years.
The last super-quake attacked Cascadia on January 19, 1700.

So, a super-quake might take place along the Cascadia subduction zone any time because 312 years has already passed since the last super-quake.
Mind you, a 500-years cycle is an approximation.

If you're in doubt, watch the DVD for yourself.

But, Kato, how do you know that the super quake occurred in 1700?



A certain geologist dug up the old layers of the earth near Vancouver and found out the trace of giant tsunamis that had taken place 18 times since 10,000 years ago.

Amazing!

Besides, the 1700 mega-quake was recorded in the Japanese chronicle.

Why on earth in the Japanese chronicle?



Well ..., the super quake in 1700 created the super tsunami, which hit the pacific coast of Japan.

The Japanese people at the time were totally puzzled because they didn't felt any quake at all.



So scientists found out recently that the 1700 super quake caused the super tsunami that devastated the pacific region of Japan, didn't they?

You're telling me, Diane.

But I can hardly believe that a big one is coming to Vancouver.

Well..., I searched for the video clip on the Net so that you could understand the imminent danger caused by a super-quake.

You must face the reality, though nobody can tell exactly when a big one will come.



If a mega quake occurs every 500 years, then we still have many more years before the estimated mega quake hit Vancouver.

Diane, the 500-year cycle is an approximation. 　A super quake may occur tomorrow. 　Nobody knows for sure, but the big one will certainly come in the future.

I hope, a super quake won't hit Vancouver in my lifetime.

But you see, Diane, we had an amazingly sizeable quake on December 29... So the big one might come in the near future. 　That's a possibility, isn't it?

So, Kato, you enjoyed the Vancouver view from the top of Vancouver before a meg quake hits Vancouver. 　Is that it?

Yes, you're right on... In any case, Diane, why don't you get ready for the big one?

You know what, Kato, if a mega quake hits Vancouver, what can I do anyway?

You need an emergency kit to survive the mega quake... So, the people in Vancouver start ordering those from the Burnaby firm. 　According to the above news article, the staff at the firm have been working around the clock, seven days a week, to get the shipments out.

I think it's mass hysteria.

Maybe, you're right, Diane. 　But the quake on December 29 is a good wakeup call because people are now realizing that we gotta prepare for the disaster. 　So, why don't you get yourself an emergency kit?

I'm still busy because I'm in the holiday season mode.

That's one of the top three barriers for not being prepared. 1) Apathy, or it-won't-happen-to-me attitude, 2) money, too expensive, and 3) time, too busy doing trifle things.

Kato, don't get worried about me... 　I'll build my own emergency kit.

The stories in "the Arabian Nights" were collected over many centuries by various authors, translators, and scholars across West, Central, and South Asia and North Africa.

The tales themselves trace their roots back to ancient and medieval Arabic, Persian, Indian, Egyptian and Mesopotamian folklore and literature.

In particular, many tales were originally folk stories from the Caliphate era, while others, especially the frame story, are most probably drawn from the Pahlavi Persian work Hazār Afsān which in turn relied partly on Indian elements.

What is common throughout all the editions of the Nights is the initial frame story of the ruler Shahryār and his wife Scheherazade and the framing device incorporated throughout the tales themselves.

The stories proceed from this original tale.

Some are framed within other tales, while others begin and end of their own accord.

Some editions contain only a few hundred nights, while others include 1,001 or more.
