I see... So, Canada is ranked as the fifth happiest country in the world, huh?

You're telling me, Diane.

Then Canadians should feel all happy, shouldn't we?

Oh, yes... You and I should be able to feel reasonably happy.

As I see the title and picture in the above, you are trying to tell "Happy Mayumi in Canada."

You're quite right, Diane.

Why is that?

Before I answer your question, please read the following passage:

Don't worry, we're happy

(kitchen906.jpg)

(kitchen902.jpg)

"Increasingly hapiness is considered a proper measure of social progress and goal of public policy," the report says.

"A rapidly increasing number of national and local governments are using happiness dat and research in their search for policies that could enable people to live better lives."

Giving of themselves is one of the reasons Canadians are a happy lot,

according to the report:

Canada tops the ranking for voranteerism, with the "highest shares of population volunteering in registered organizations" at 38.1%.

Kato, how come you've pasted the above passage?

Well..., the other day, Mayumi applied for a volunteer position, and received the following reply:

Hi Mayumi,

My name is Robert Johnson and
I am part of the Volunteer Resources Department at Union Gospel Mission.

First of all, thank you for your interest in volunteering at Union Gospel Mission.

Here is the process we follow for all volunteers:

- First, attend a volunteer orientation

- Second, complete an application form

- Third, attend an interview with Volunteer Resources

Please note that reference checks will take place for all volunteers and a criminal record check is required.

Volunteers must be at least 12 years of age,
and for most opportunities the minimum age is 19.

For volunteers under the age of 19 parental supervision or permission is required depending on the placement.

(gospel03.jpg)

At the Volunteer Orientation you will learn about different volunteer opportunities available here at Union Gospel Mission.

If you would be interested in attending an upcoming orientation, please let us know and we'd be pleased to let you know upcoming dates.

Thank you,

Robert

Did Mayumi attend the orientation?

She replied like this:

(mayumi40.png)

Dear Robert,

Thank you for your email.

Yes, I'll be more than happy to take part in the orientation held on the earliest possible date.

Please let me know the upcoming dates.

I would really appreciate that.

Best regards,

Mayumi Ogawa

What happened?

Well..., there is a long waiting list. Mayumi has to wait for a couple of months to attend even the first available orientation.

So, what did she do?

One day, Mayumi and I were chatting at one of the table in the atrium at the cantral library.

(atrium02.jpg)

What happened?

A woman called Vicky happened to walk by and noticed us while we talked in Japanese.

(vinito02.jpg)

Vicky used to live in Hokkaido, the northern island of Japan.

(jpnmap01.png)

(hokkaido90.jpg)

Apparently she seemed to get kinda nostalgic and talked to us, introducing herself.

Is Vicky a Canadian?

Of course, she is, but a naturalized Canadian, originally from Brazil. We've become friends. And later Vicky took Mayumi to Carnegie Centre to enjoy some music in the theatre.

(carnegie82.jpg)

Is Vicky a member of Carnegie Centre band?

No, she is not, but she joined them voluntarily and played the piano. That's what Mayumi told me. Mayumi was really surprised to find out that Vicky is a telented pianist. Anyway, over there Mayumi happened to see the big poster on the wall.

(carnegie80.jpg)

I see... So Mayumi noticed the above poster. Did she apply for a volunteer position?

Actually Mayumi talked to one of the friendly staff and later met a woman in charge of the volunteer programs.

Did Mayumi get an offer.

Luckily enough, she did after explaining her dream to become a baker in Canada.

What is Mayumi doing at Carnegie Centre?

She is now working in the kitchen.

(carnegie01.jpg)

(carnegie02.jpg)

(carnegie06.jpg)

I see... that's why Mayumi feels profoundly happy, huh?

Yes, she does.

Have you ever been to Vancouver?

It is a beautiful city---one of the best cities in the world.

Kato says that Vancouver is a paradise.

As you know, however, nothing is perfect, nobody is perfect.

So no city is perfect.

However, no matter what result comes out from the plebiscite, I wish, Vancouver remains to be a beautiful city.

In any case, I hope Kato will write another interesting article soon.

So please come back to see me.

Have a nice day!

Bye bye ...

Hi, I'm June Adams.

Kato is a real movie lover, who tries to watch 1001 movies by the end of this year.

(lib50112a.png)

"Actual Catalogue Page"

So far, he's watched 658 movies.

That is, he must see 343 more movies to accomplish his goal.

I'm particularly interested in Number 649 in the above list.

It is called "The Sawshank Redemption."

(shawshan.jpg)

【Trailer】

Kato jotted down his comment as follows:

This is a 1994 epic American drama written and directed by Frank Darabont.

Adapted from the Stephen King novella "Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption", the film tells the story of Andy Dufresne, a banker who is sentenced to life in Shawshank State Prison for the murder of his wife and her lover despite his claims of innocence.

During his time at the prison, he befriends a fellow inmate, Ellis Boyd "Red" Redding, and finds himself protected by the guards after the warden begins using him in his money laundering operation.

I think this is one of the greatest movies, in which you could feel, as if in realty, that maintaining one's feeling of self-worth is quite important even when placed in a hopeless position.

(shawshan2.jpg)

This film clearly shows how you can be free, even in prison, or unfree, even in freedom, based on one's outlook on life.

The above comment sounds quite interesting, doesn't it?

Why don't you see it?
