Denman-san, do you like bagels with lox?

Oh yes, I do. But I did't know that lox means a fillet of brined salmon.

How did you come to know that?

Actually, I visited your blog.

I saw the following picture in your article.

It looks so nice and delicious that my stomach starts rumbling.

The bagel with lox makes your stomach rumble, doesn't it?

Oh yes, you're tellin me, Mari-chan, but as you see the bagel has some pieces of salmon on it. The strange thing is that I don't see the word salmon in your article. In any case, I've got a hunch that lox must have something to do with salmon, so I looked it up in Wikipedia.

Lox

(lox004.jpg)
(Lox on Bagel)

Lox is a fillet of brined salmon.
Traditionally, lox is served on a bagel with cream cheese, and is usually garnished with tomato, sliced red onion, and sometimes capers, which diners may or may not opt to add to the bagel.
Some American preparations of scrambled eggs or frittata include a mince of lox and onion.

Etymology

The word lox is derived from the German word for salmon, Lachs, which may ultimately derive from the Indo-European word for salmon, *laks-.
The word lox has cognates in numerous European languages that also derive from one of the Indo-European languages.

Wikipedia

(lox005.jpg)
(Lox and cream cheese sandwich)

So, Mari-chan, you'd like to visit Lox of Bagels in Honolulu, eh?

Oh yes, I'd love to... and also taste various types of Hawaiian food

Denman-san, have you been to Hawaii?

Of course, I have. I enjoyed eating laulau.

Laulau

(laulau02.jpg)

Laulau is a Hawaiian dish. Traditionally, it consisted of pork in wrapped taro leaf.

In old Hawaii, laulau was assembled by taking a few luau leaves and placing a few pieces of fish and pork in the center.
The ends of the luau leaf are folded and wrapped again in the leaf.
When ready, all the laulau is placed in an underground oven, called an imu.
Hot rocks are placed on the dish and covered in banana leaves and buried again.
A few hours later the laulau is ready to eat.

In modern times, the dish uses taro leaves, salted butterfish, and either pork, beef, or chicken and is usually steamed on the stove.
Laulau is a typical plate lunch dish and is usually served with a side of rice and macaroni salad.

Ummmm ... looks interesting. I'll try laulau the next time I visit Hawaii. By the way, Denman-san, have you ever tasted bagels in Montreal?

Yes, I have. Actually, I visited St. Viateur Bagel Shop.

No kidding!

I'll show you how they work in the shop.

So, Denman-san, when I visit Canada, you'll take me to St. Viateur Bagel Shop in Montreal, won't you?

You bet on that.

Hi, I'm June Adames.

Have you ever read James Herriot's short stories?

I'm an enthusiastic fan of James Herriot.

In his stories you will find Yorkshire scones and puddings.

(herriot83.jpg)

Author Profile: James Herriot

I like his stories because I love his animal stories.

Yet animals play a lesser, sometimes even a negligible, role in many of Wight's tales.

The overall theme of his stories is Yorkshire country life, with its people and their animals as primary elements, which provide their distinct character.

Furthermore, it is Herriot's shrewd observations of persons, animals, and their close inter-relationship, which give his writing much of its flavour.

Herriot was just as interested in their owners as he was in his patients and his writing is, at root, an amiable but keen comment on the human condition.

The Yorkshire animals provide the elements of pain and drama.

The role of their owners is to feel and express joy, sadness, and, sometimes, triumph.
